Every fibre link has a loss budget: the light that leaves one end must arrive at the other with enough strength to be read. Every joint, connector and bend spends part of that budget. A clean fusion splice costs almost nothing — hundredths of a decibel; a poor one, or a cable bent tighter than its radius, can spend the whole budget in one spot and turn a gigabit link into a coin-toss.
This is why OTDR testing isn't optional ceremony. The trace shows every event on the run — each splice, each connector, each stress point — measured and located to the metre. It's the difference between 'the link is up' and 'the link meets spec with headroom, and here's the proof per core'. When something fails at 2am two years later, that baseline trace halves the diagnosis time.
